Women spend a lot of time preparing themselves every day. Be it for work, for dates, for night-outs, for parties, or even for just a quick grocery trip, a woman is sure to come prepared. Moreover, most of their prep time is expended on applying make-up. In fact, about three-fifths of the time women spend preparing is allotted to make-up. This is because women want to try different styles on different occasions but find it hard to achieve the look that’s perfect for them. The hardest make-up to work with? You guessed right – lipstick.
Men might not understand this but there’s always a difficulty in choosing the right lipstick. All women are aware of the embarrassment brought about by wearing the wrong shade of lipstick so some just decide to wear the same old lipstick over and over without exploring other shades for the fear of mismatching. Today, we end that dilemma by coming up with a guide on choosing the lipstick that suits you best. So read on and finally solve your lipstick dilemma!
TIP #1: Determine your skin tone

Skin tone is the most common basis in choosing the right lipstick. There are five types of skin tones and in this article, we will discuss the best lipstick choice for each skin tone.
FAIR OR LIGHT SKIN TONE: Fair and light skin are both pale and very sensitive to the point that it burns easily under the sun. It is also the type of skin that is prone to freckles. For this skin tone, it is best to use red, nude, coral and cool colors. Some examples are light pink, coral, peach, beige, nude, and dusty red.
MEDIUM SKIN TONE: Medium complexion is the easiest to tan but not the most sensitive and thus, is not prone to burning. For medium-skinned people, suggestions are colors like rose, berry, cherry red, and mauve shades.
TAN SKIN TONE: Tanned skin and olive skin both classify as a tan skin tone. People with this complexion can go perfectly with most lipsticks except for brown and purple shades. But the best colors are deep pink, bright red, coral, and colors with an orange undertone.
DEEP SKIN TONE: People with deep skin tones are the ones who don’t get sunburned even after long exposures to the sun. Brown and purple shades like caramel, plum, wine, metallic ruby reds, and blue-based red shades are best for these type of people.
TIP #2: Determine your skin undertone

While there are five types of skin tones, there are only three types of undertones – cool, warm, and neutral. If you already know your undertone, then good for you. But if you don’t, a quick tip on how to figure it out is just to look at the color of your veins on your wrists. Blue or purple veins indicate a cool undertone. If your veins are green, then your undertone is warm. If you have a difficulty deciding if the veins are blue or green, then you have a neutral undertone. This means that you can rock lipstick shades from both cool and warm undertones. Olive skinned people usually have neutral undertones.
COOL UNDERTONE: For fair and light-skinned people, nude or soft mocha is highly suggested, while for those with medium skin tone, pink and cranberry shades look best. Moreover, ruby and wine-colored reds are for tan and deep complexions.
WARM UNDERTONE: For people with fair or light skin tones, it is best to wear pale pinks and nudes with a hint of peach, while for those with medium, tan, or deep skin tones, you can try experimenting with copper and bronze shades.
TIP #3: Consider the size of your lips

Determining your skin tone and undertone will be of great help to you in choosing the right lipstick, no doubt about that. But if you want the perfect look, then there are other factors you need to consider – like the size of your lips.
THIN LIPS: If you have thin lips, then avoid dark and flashy colors because it will only make your lips look even thinner. Lipsticks with a matte finish will also do the same so avoid it as well. Instead, apply glosses, shimmery shades, and creamy lipsticks to make your lips look fuller.
PLUMP LIPS: Avoid lipsticks with a glossy and glittery texture, as well as those that are too light. Use dark colors instead.
TIP #4: Consider your hair color

Your hair color is just as important as the size of your lips when it comes to choosing the right shade of lipstick. Sometimes we forget about the impact of the hair, but we shouldn’t! A lipstick clashing with the hair color is a no-no. So here are some tips.
DARK HAIR: Bright pink, cherry, plum, and scarlet colors work best for fair and light-skinned people with dark hair. But for those with medium, tan, or deep skin tones, bronze, golden beige, ochre, and terracotta colors are the best.
BLONDE HAIR: For blondes with fair or light skin tones, scarlet colors and shades of pink are the most advisable, while caramel, ochre, and warm shades of pink suit medium, tan, or deep-skinned people best.
TIP #5: Match your eye color

Another thing that you need to consider in choosing a lipstick color is your eyes. You need to make sure that your lipstick will compliment your eyes and not clash with its color.
BROWN EYES: Brown eyes are the easiest to compliment. Simply use shades of brown, bright reds, and light pinks, and you’ll look great.
GRAY EYES: To compliment gray eyes, use nudes and plum colors.
BLUE EYES: Scarlet colors and different shades of cherry go well with blue eyes.
GREEN EYES: Unique-colored eyes such as green eyes also need unique-colored lips to compliment them. Terracotta and shades of pink will do the trick.
Choosing the perfect lipstick can be extremely challenging. But in reality, all you need to do is get to know your features better to be able to choose correctly. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready for that date!
